University of Colorado Boulder scientists created the Paper Mechatronics project, which uses precision-cut paper templates and simple motors to teach students basic engineering principles. The project is changing traditional models of education and helping shape students’ futures.
Building from the basic templates, students have created robotic representations of divers jumping off a diving board, a duck circling a pond and planets rotating in space.
“The intent of our work is to provide things for kids to do,” says Mike Eisenberg, a professor in the Department of Computer Science and the Institute of Cognitive Science (ICS). “We think in those terms rather than thinking in terms of teaching skills or even teaching particular content.”
